Journeyman Essential Skills:
Safety is always first!
Be familiar with the Merit Electric Safety Manual and Handbook.
Know what to do and follow the procedures when there is an accident.
Follow the procedures when OSHA visits.
Follow the procedures when someone is in violation of safety regulations.
Wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses at all times), respirator, ear protection, etc., when required.
Attend all required safety and jobsite meetings.
Install conduit and cable systems.
Bend conduit by hand with hand benders.
Switchgear installation and termination.
Layout and preparation for installation.
Underground layout and rough-in.
Motors and controls - trouble shooting.
Trim out devices and install light fixtures.
Fire alarm and special systems.
Keep work areas clean and organized.
Operate equipment, trenches, back hoe and lift trucks in a safe manner.
Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
Wire and conduit sizing.
Comprehends construction drawings and schematics.
Control wiring (HVAC, motors, lighting, etc.)
Special systems (fire alarm, nurse call, security, etc.)
Understands rough-in methods and materials.
Trim -- fixtures and devices.
Switchgear -- distribution panels, gutters, meters, panelboards.
Mathematical and mechanical aptitude necessary to perform required installations.
Must be able to use all power tools, saws, threaders, wire tuggers, hydraulic benders, and knockout punches.
